Port Royal High is committed to the idea of "learning through enjoyment," the idea that classes don't have to be boring and learning can be fun.
Port Royal High is a school created for the students who hate school. We believe that students can learn what they need to know through subjects that they enjoy. We offer a variety of courses in a variety of subjects to be able to cater to our students' individual needs and interests. We operate more like a college than a high school by allowing our students to take our World War 2 class instead of a World Civilizations class if that's where their interests lie. A student can opt to take Russian in lieu of Spanish should they so desire. We strive to create a fun, creative atmosphere where students can not only learn facts, but learn to think and have well formed opinions. Our teachers are all young at heart and remember what high school was like. We try to make our students' high school experience better than ours was. Students from Port Royal have been accepted at Savannah College of Art and Design, Harvard, William and Mary, New York University, MIT, Tulane, as well as many others. Most receive financial aid for academic achievement. Our average SAT score (taken in 11th grade) is 1350 (by the old 1600 point grading system) and our average ACT score is 32. With an atmosphere of creativity and diversity, we allow our students to grow, learn, change and express themselves to the fullest.

Port Royal High School has a rich, though not always bright history. The building itself has been used for a church, a hospital and finally a school, and has seen three great wars come and go. Built in 1834 as an episcopal church, the building was repurposed in 1861 as a field hospital for wounded soldiers in the Civil War. It continued to function as a hospital until 1867, when the last veteran was finally able to leave the hospital, walking out on his own two legs. The building lay empty for seventeen years, gathering dust and mold until finally, one late spring morning in 1884, it caught the eye of a particularly ambitious academic. Four years later, it became Port Royal Boys School, serving young men from age 6-18. In 1910, the school's name (and function) changed, becoming Port Royal School, serving both young men and young women. Finally, in 1948, the school reach it's final incarnation, Port Royal High School, serving young men and young women from 9th grade to 12th grade, and we hope to continue our proud history of service for many years to come.
